The R36 Ultra is a pocket retro handheld console for working through older libraries on the sofa or the train. It has a 4-inch IPS screen, and it plays the retro games you own: you load your own files.

Why it earns a spot in your bag

• 4-inch IPS screen: a bigger panel than most pocket handhelds, at 720 × 480.
• 128 GB storage: plenty of room for your own retro game files and saves.
• Built-in battery: rechargeable, so there are no AAs to swap out.
• Pocket size: it slips into a jacket pocket for the commute.
• Multilingual menus: English plus more than 15 other languages, including Spanish, French, German and Japanese.

Specs

Good to know

• It plays the retro games you own. You copy your own files onto the storage card from a computer.
• Back up your storage card when it arrives, before you change anything on it.
• Battery capacity and run time aren't listed by the supplier, so plan to charge after each long session until you know your numbers.
• This is a budget handheld. Expect it to handle older systems well and to struggle with the most demanding ones.

FAQ

What is a retro handheld console?

It's a pocket device built to run classic games from older systems through emulation. You supply the game files you own.

Does the R36 Ultra come with games?

We sell it as hardware only. You load the retro games you own onto it.

How do I add games to it?

Take out the storage card, put it in a card reader on your computer and copy your files into the folder for each system. Put the card back and the games show up in the menu.

Is a 4-inch screen big enough?

For retro games it's comfortable. Most older games were made for small, low-resolution screens, and 720 × 480 shows them cleanly.
